Woe unto the world because of offences! for it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh! Wherefore if thy neighbor’s hand or his foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them away; and if thy neighbor’s eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it away. — Not St Matthew 18

    Nor did he say, "Take the log out of your own eye and use it to poke your neighbor."

    I wonder why people act as though he did.

    I have long thought that the true difference is not between conservatives and liberals, but between those who read the Jesus stories and identify with those he spoke to, and those who read them and identify with Jesus.

    And so there are those who happily tell us to go and sin no more, whatever their particular bug bear is at the time, and those who will not throw the first stone, whatever they might feel about the issue at hand.
