The serious and sometimes satirical reflections of a priest, poet, and pilgrim —
who knowing he has not obtained the goal, presses on in a Godward direction.
That the poorest country in the hemisphere should be struck with such a disaster, reminds me of Iris Murdoch's telling phrase: "like being battered on a bruise." Pray for the people of Haiti, and work to send them help.

Pat Robertson has said today that this has come upon the Haitians because they made a pact with the devil to win their freedom from the French. What an evil, vile thing to say! Consider the source.
Of all the nations in this hemisphere, Haiti, being the poorest, was least equipped for such a disastrous catastrophe!
7.3 on the Richter scale and His Excellency the President lately reporting this morning that hundreds of thousands to have perished. I hope that is an uneducated overestimate.
Lord hear our prayers for these our brothers and sisters in sore distress of Haiti.
