The serious and sometimes satirical reflections of a priest, poet, and pilgrim — who knowing he has not obtained the goal, presses on in a Godward direction.

The Fire of Justice
Blessed Thurgood Marshall
Written today by the hand of Tobias Stanislas Haller.
Thanks, my friends. It was good to pick up the art-tools again after a lapse. I think I'm going to try to write an icon for a new saint each month -- from the new folks in Holy Women Holy Men. Any suggestions for June?
Seriously, though, I was thinking of the latter. I've got a copy of HWHM and was inspired when I saw Thurgood's listing, though of course I'd remembered he was "in."
Actually, Mimi, my teacher, John Walsted, was commissioned to write the official beatification icon of John XXIII. Interesting that Rome came to an Episcopal priest for this.
Mimi, John is a very gifted man. He also has a tremendous output and spends most of his time in iconography. Perhaps when I'm ready for retirement....
That's part of the reason I came up with these "quick icone" written on cardboard (yes, Dahveed!) with Conte crayons. I suppose, in prayer form, this is the difference between the Divine Liturgy and the Arrow Prayer or Ejaculation. (Quiet in the back!)

Well done, Tobias. A fine tribute to a most excellent saint of God.
ReplyDeleteLovely, Tobias.
ReplyDeleteHoly Thurgood, pray for us.

ReplyDeleteAny suggestions for June?
ReplyDeleteYou can do me if you like, Tobias, but I'm not dead yet. Also, the suggestions should come from others besides me. :-)
June Butler
Seriously, are you looking for names of more recent additions to the calendar?
GM, I thought of that as I wrote! Ha!

I give an ecumenical nod to John XXIII. His was not a pretty face, but he had a heart as great as all outdoors.

ReplyDeleteTobias, I did not know we both knew John Walsted. He was my first confessor when I became an Episcopalian.
ReplyDeleteThank you for Blessed Thurgood. Very nice.
Ah, that's a wonderful icon of John XXIII by John Walsted. It's odd that Rome sought out an Episcopal priest to do the honors.
ReplyDeleteIt is lovely.
ReplyDeleteIs the canvas cardboard?
I suggest Ini Kopuria or Cornelius Hill.

Thanks for the suggestions, Dahveed.
