Maxim for 02.18.12

Epistemic humility does not mean submitting to others’ certainties. It means sitting lightly with one’s own.

  1. I always say, re my belief in the possibility that an abortion can be a moral choice, that "OCICBW".

    But saying I COULD be wrong, does not mean my belief need be subsumed to those who are CERTAIN they are right. But I try to remain open to new (truer) truths, too.

    It's a tension I just live with/into, grow from (God willing!).

  2. Thanks, JCF., tho' I wasn't thinking of abortion, but about the Anglican Covenant, which seems to be based on a submission model rather than a humility model. But I do take your point, which becomes problematical when it is about imposing views on others rather than making choices for oneself.
