Thought for 06.17.12

How wonderful to be reminded once again at Morning Prayer today that her husband thought himself of more value to Hannah  “than ten sons.” Biblical evidence that marriage is not just about progeny.

  1. Is it not her husband, Elkanah, that is dearer to Hannah than ten sons -- or more precisely he presumes that he is. Your point about marriage not being just about progeny still stands, though.

  2. Indeed so, Allen. In my haste I inverted the actors in my original note, which was auto-posted at FB. I've made the correction here, shortly after I read once more what I'd written.

In the long run, I think this makes the case even stronger: it also echoes the Vulgate bowdlerization of the Lament of David for Jonathan, "Your love for me was more wonderful than the love of women..." where the Vulgate adds, "...for their children."
