To my Evangelical friends out there: Since we are not saved by good works, why should we be damned for bad ones? If salvation really is all about grace through faith, and all fall short, isn't it time to get over worrying about other people’s sins and give thanks for amazing grace?

You win the internet. The first sentence is the most beautifully put way I've come across of exposing the paradox at the heart of sola fide, not that I even believe in it.
ReplyDeleteI have always loved Dame Julian's words: "...the beholding of other men's sins makes, as it were, a thick mist before the eye of the soul, and we cannot for the time see the fairness of God..." (Ch.76)
ReplyDeleteI think the important thing to remember is that God and God's Grace are fundamentally unfair. That is a good thing. Christ makes this clear in the parable of the workers who all received the same wage whether the worked all day or for an hour.
ReplyDeleteKevin, I think "unfair" is seeing it from the viewpoint of the all-day workers who "only" received the all-day pay. The landowner points out the fact that they got what they deserved; that others also got something they did not deserve, based on the generosity of the landowner, is not really unfair to anyone, is it?
