Four for Freedom

O God, whose Spirit guides us into all truth and makes us free: Strengthen and sustain us as you did your servants Elizabeth, Amelia, Sojourner, and Harriet. Give us vision and courage to stand against oppression and injustice and all that works against the glorious liberty to which you call all your children; through Jesus Christ our Savior, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

For their feast on July 20 — posted early as I am going on retreat.

Thank you for posting this along with the collect because it allows me to note a pet peeve of mine: this collect is the only one that does not include the full name of those honored on their feast day. I blogged about this here. It's a small thing, but given that these women worked for equality, I find it at best strange that they are not given equal treatment on a day designed to honor them.

Thanks for the observation, LKT. Actually I prefer the tradition of only using Christian names for saints, but that is a tradition very unevenly observed, and you are right to note that the collect for these four is exceptional rather than the rule.
