Few things are as revealing of the depth of one’s failure to grasp a concept as the inappropriate analogies one brings to bear in the discussion.

who knowing he has not obtained the goal, presses on in a Godward direction.

But the analogies used explain the true feelings of the speaker much more than anything else he or she says! They are astonishingly revealing and therefore extremely helpful in understanding what really motivates our conversation partners.
Tobias - you've been reading the HoB/D list too much.
EB and Ps, right on both counts...
You haven't been reading Sarah Hey's latest metaphor article, have you?
Susan, I avoid reading the site on which Sarah posts because it induces nausea. I used to visit regularly and even occasionally make the odd attempt at reasonable dialogue, but the atmosphere is close and stuffy. I do recall a number of weird metaphorical leaps, analogies, and allegories from former visits. Also the references to Narnia and LoTR. Very strange world-view, with a fairly strong delusional component and an apocalyptic attitude. Not my cup of tea.
Yes, i understand. It was as usual over the top even for her. And I agree delusional is the correct adjective!
Carry on with your good work.
What about inappropriate verbs?
Over on TA, hysterical terms for the vote on women bishops include "force" "expel" and "exclude".
Look, when a priest- or bishop-made-female says "The Body of Christ, the Bread of Heaven" or "The blessing of God Almighty..." w/ hand raised or extended, in offering, you just CAN'T turn this into Actung-Halt sign, much less a finger on the button of a trapdoor! You just can't, without being guilty of torturing language beyond all recognition (Heh, make that "Language FUBAR" ;-/)
Where DO they get off with this? (Well, beside Rome, as they huff-n-puff. "Vaya con Dios", I tell 'em)
